The Pepino Gold (Solanum muricatum) is a special and original plant to have in your house! The fruit is also called the apple melon or melon pear because of its colour, shape and taste. The Pepino tastes deliciously sweet and is reminiscent of the taste of melon, with sweet and firm flesh. The melon pear originates from the highlands of Colombia, Ecuador and Peru where it is grown at an altitude of 900-2800 metres. The fruit is very healthy and contains vitamins A, B1, B2, B3, B11 and C. Pepino is delicious to use with different cheeses and herbs, or can be used as a fruit in a dessert or pie.
Care
When properly cared for, Pepino Gold can produce many fruits. Give the plants regular sips of water. Furthermore, the melon pear can flower very quickly, sometimes within as little as 4 months. As with tomatoes, it is advisable to regularly pick the leaves, so that more sunlight can reach the fruits, allowing them to ripen better. From August, the first fruits are ready for picking and eating!
