Lemaireocereus thurberi syn. Stenocereus thurberi (Organ pipe cactus)

Lemaireocereus thurberi, more commonly known as the Organ Pipe Cactus, is a striking, sculptural cactus native to the Sonoran Desert, which spans the southwestern United States and Mexico. This cactus is characterized by its upright, grey-green columns that often branch from the base. These columns are lined with distinct ribs and neat rows of spines, resembling the pipes of a church organ—hence its common name. The Organ Pipe Cactus can grow to impressive heights of up to 7.5 meters (25 feet), though it may take several decades to reach full maturity.

In late spring to summer, it produces large, white flowers that bloom at night—opening just before sunset and closing in the early morning. These nocturnal blossoms are specially adapted to attract nighttime pollinators such as bats and moths, making the cactus an important part of the desert ecosystem.
